LET’S SAY A PRAYER FOR MR. ROBERTS

LET’S SAY A PRAYER FOR MR. ROBERTS

If Mr. Roberts performs as well as Henry Fonda played Mister Roberts in the film of the same name, the Dodgers might have a stellar season. Fonda played Doug Roberts, a frustrated officer on board a cargo ship in the idle of World War II both in the play and film in which he was awarded an Academy nomination for Best Actor. Dave Roberts, meantime, is best known for his role in the famous Boston Red Sox come back against the New York Yankees, in which they became the first team to make up a 3-0 deficit and win the Red Sox first World’s title in more than 100 years. He’s an untested manager, however, which I think the Dodger suits love. Why no Dusty Baker, no Kirk Gibson, no one with Dodger ties and managerial experience? You got me. Roberts played for LA for a cup of coffee but always played the game the right way, never dabbled in player turmoil or stupid stuff on or away form the ball field. I still think the club could have made a better choice but to be blunt, I’m always happy to see a black man get a good job. I don’t think Roberts can handle this bunch of high paid underachievers but I hope I’m wrong. And if my track record is any indication, Mr. Roberts should have along, successful stay in LA.
