Thunderstorm moves in causes chaos, cools things down

After a 10th consecutive day of 100-plus degree temperatures, a fast-moving thunderstorm powered through Kern County on Sunday with strong winds, thunder, lightning, and rain.

At Meadows Field, temperatures hit 109 degrees on Sunday before the storm moved in and dropped the temperature by 28 degrees at 5:54 p.m. Wind speeds were measured at 32 mph as the storm moved into the area, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford.

The heavy rain caused chaos on the northbound Highway 99 from Panama Lane to Ming Avenue with traffic accidents and a downed power line. At one point, starting at 5 p.m., the California Highway Patrol was working 17 incidents in around Bakersfield. Roadway flooding was reported in Taft and Lamont.
