McCarthy discusses health care victory, what’s next

The day after one of the biggest legislative victories of his political career, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) was a guest on “The Ralph Bailey Show” and said the work is not done when it comes to the recently passed Affordable Health Care Act.

Facing a vote in the Senate, McCarthy said he does not expect the bill, that was narrowly approved in the house, to not have changes in the Senate, which means plenty of work to be done between the two legislative bodies before it can be signed into law by President Donald Trump.

Now that we’re into the Senate there rules apply to them different than ours,” McCarthy said. “They can add things without votes that we couldn’t. So, I think we’ll see this bill amended. When it gets amended then it has to go what is a conference, which you would take members of the House and members of the Senate, and they would be in a conference working out the differences.”

McCarthy spent about 20 minutes on the show and took calls from listeners.

One caller complained about the idea of turning the health care decisions up to the individual states, especially in California, where Democrats control the state’ government.

“How are we going to escape Obamacare?” asked one caller.

McCarthy said the states will be allowed to be more creative how they administer the law, and how they want to manage other government-run health care, including Medicaid. McCarthy said he believed the replacement bill would improve healthcare in California.
