Sheriff Youngblood to ask county to bypass sanctuary county status

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood has a long-held stance on enforcing the nation’s immigration laws, but he’s preparing to take it to another level on May 2 at the Kern County Board of Supervisors.

Youngblood is proposing that Kern County become a “law and order county,” rather than a sanctuary county. Currently only a handful of California’s 58 counties are considered sanctuary counties, where illegal immigrants are not prosecuted based on their federal immigration standing.

It has become a hot-button issue with the election of President Donald Trump and the selection of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General.

Youngblood is expected to discuss the proposal with the media this afternoon.
