3 Dogs, Cat Die In Tehachapi House Fire



FEBRUARY 2, 2012 -- A floor furnace was likely to blame in a Tehachapi, Calif. house fire on Wednesday that killed 3 dogs and a cat.

According to the Kern County Fire Department, just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 1, firefighters received a call for a structure fire in the 500 block of East F Street in Tehachapi.

Upon arrival, fire crews were faced with a fire burning in the floor of the home that started near a floor furnace. Fire officials said the blaze was contained in just under twenty minutes.

Three people were living in the house, but no one was home when the fire started. Twelve animals were reported to have been in the house at the time of the incident. Three dogs and one cat died in the fire, the other eight animals are unaccounted for at this time.

There were no reported injuries and damages are estimated at $30,000. Firefighters were able to save $90,000 worth of property. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is likely to have started in the floor furnace.

Twelve firefighters responded to the incident.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind the community to check, clean, and service their furnaces regularly.
