UPDATED: Man Awaiting Trial Dies In Lerdo Prison



A male inmate awaiting trial died at Lerdo Prison in Shafter, Calif.

According to the Kern County Sheriff's Office, on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 4:34 a.m., detention deputies at Lerdo Pre-Trial discovered 48-year old inmate Jeffrey Reed, unresponsive, inside his cell. Detention Deputies and Lerdo medical staff administered life saving measures until medical aid arrived on scene.

Sheriff's officials said Reed was transported by ambulance to the Bakersfield Heart Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

There were no signs of trauma, officilals said. Detectives responded to Lerdo Pre-Trial to investigate the death as is standard protocol. The scene had been secured and other inmates were separated and interviewed by detectives.

There were no indications of suspicious activity inside the deceased inmate’s cell or from the statements obtained. Investigation is continuing.
