Lieutenant Jeff Smith of the State Department of Corrections told Kern Radio, News Talk 1180 the riot involved about 300 inmates and some received minor to moderate injuries.
"From stab wounds, puncture wounds; slashing type wounds from inmate-manufactured weapons," Smith said. He added there were no injuries caused by staff.
Smith said the fight broke out at about 1:45 p.m. in the recreation yard of Facility "A" and involved members of the Crips and Southern Hispanics gangs.
"Corrections officers were dispatched and utilized less lethal rounds, chemical agents, and then one of the officers shot two warning shots from a mini-14 rifle, which quelled the disturbance," Smith said.
He said the tear gas was fired toward the 300 rioters before they were brought under control by the two warning shots from a rifle.
