CSU Bakersfield OLLI Program presents L.A. poet Rich Ferguson. He will be headlining an event showcasing CSU Bakersfield OLLI student poets at 6 p.m.
Ferguson has performed across the country. He has shared the stage with Patti Smith and Janet Hamill, Exene Cervenka, David Thomas of Pere Ubu, Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons), Bob Holman, and many other esteemed poets and musicians. In addition, he has been published in the LA TIMES, spotlighted on PBS.
Last Saturday, poet Michael Luis Medrano, author of "Born In The Cavity Of Sunsets" (2009) performed at Russo's Books as part of the CSUB event showcasing CSU Bakersfield OLLI student poets.
“The OLLI poetry workshop and events are set up to empower students in both writing and performance. I’m so glad the students can be exposed to such great out-of-town talent. They, like I have been, will be inspired," says CSUB OLLI Poetry workshop professor Nick Belardes. "Medrano really helped the class to understand not only great poetry, but the idea of a poet community."
Medrano's work, published by Arizona State University's Bilingual Press is a testament to the emergence of new Latino voices from the Central Valley. Born and raised in Fresno, Calif., Medrano is an MFA graduate of the University of Minnesota.

"Michael Medrano and Rich Ferguson represent two exciting poets with a diverse style," said Belardes. "Medrano represents an emerging Central Valley Latino voice that can really inspire Bakersfield poets to write about their lives in the San Joaquin. Ferguson’s sheer ability to perform and wow a crowd will be dynamite. Last time I brought him to town he performed spoken word backed by Bakersfield’s Mento Buru. It was classic. He's going to be wonderful again."
CSUB OLLI student poets will be performing various works prior to Ferguson's performance. This free event is at 6 p.m.
