The Eye: Main Contributor Bios



The Eye is composed of a few core writers, photographers and videographers from around Bakersfield, Calif. All are connected to the music scene in some way, whether they simply chronicle it or are musicians themselves. Now meet the crew.

Missy Wiggins has been a local singer and musician since 1996 and is a founding member of the local rock group The Bird Channel. Blogging about music and motherhood (and occasionally food) you can find her musings at Revelations of Missy. She also started up a monthly park clean-up group at Keep Bakersfield Beautiful. Missy takes photos and writes for The Eye.
Nick Belardes founded The Eye and the infamous Paperback Writer blog (Bakersfield Music Scene from 2005-2007). Illustrator of NYT Best Selling novel West of Here (2011), he is author of Random Obsessions (2009), Lords (2005), Small Places (2008, World's first Twitter novel). Multimedia Manager for American General Media, he also runs the Random Writers Workshop. Mikee has been involved with the local music scene for over a decade. He is currently working on a new band. Previously he played bass guitar for local bands "Blue Blanket Room", "Butterfly Stitches", and "Mission : Tonight". He has also been blogging and connecting with bands since 1999 with his blog Local Rock Stars. He was also a podcaster with a medium-sized podcasting network that has recently gain a lot of momentum. Joseph Ruiz, a graduate of Boston University, is a videographer and photographer. He runs Loiter Productions and makes incredible music videos, skateboard promos and more. He takes photos and creates 99-percent of all videos for The Eye.
Jane Hawley was raised in Bakersfield then graduated from the University of Wyoming with an English degree. She attends the Random Writers Workshop and writes a blog about downtown life called Downtown Beat. At work on a novel titled Sunflower City, Jane hopes to attend a graduate program for creative writing.
Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Brandon Batson moved to Bakersfield in September of 2009 to be the Worship and Production Pastor at Hingepoint Church. A talented songwriter and musician, Brandon believes music should challenge our comfort zones, make us think, and change the way we view our world. His years of experience touring with numerous bands and leading musicians give him a unique perspective on music scenes.
Landen Belardes has been in the Bakersfield Music Scene since around 2005, getting his feet wet in the band Dirty Spanglish. Now he's a solo artist, has an album out called "Listen" and is music director at The Great Room at Olive Drive Church. He has written music for film and even the Bakersfield Condors.
